Here are the bands and/or musicians whom people have said represent goth music. Of course, not everyone is going to agree with this list. I share it with you because it is interesting. A lot of these groups I'd never heard about, and it has sent me on a net search for websites, articles in e-zines, and audio clips that has been very fun.

Some of the comments about what goth music is:

"...dark, low tones, cryptlike voice, gloomy guitars..."

"...dark or emotional often cathartic or passionate..."

"Beauty and brooding intensity coupled with an obsession with melancholic imagery..."

"Lyrics are deep, meaningful. Music changes emotion."

"I've found most goth music to strike intense emotions of some sort, such as melancholy, longing, despair, or darkness. These are emotions from which most other types of music shy away. Minor chords are almost always characteristic of goth music since they lend themselves well to creating some dark or ethereal mood and/or aura."

"Darkness, a certain beautification or glamour about death and all things dark & sinister..."

"Macabre but it has an aching beauty about , except for the i-wanna-kill-the-world industrial crap."

"Has to be dark, industrial is cool, techno..."

"...gloomy, danceable, angry, intelligent, pretty..."

"DARK! No musical characteristics, there are so many styles in goth, that's what made our music so rich and diverse."

"...electronica, punk, & death metal..."

"dark, speaking (chanting, singing...whatever you want to call it) about death, melodicly errie, and in many aspects, creepy. A must have in any CD collection. A good Gothic CD is "In Goth Daze" It's a compilation of several different gothic bands."

"Well, it's usually calming and beautiful, yet most find it dreary and dirge-like."

"Dark, moody, beautiful....witty humor and tons of flair :) "

"Anything that they can claim to be theirs alone, to feed their belief that they are, in fact, different, i.e. stuff that'll scare the shit out of their parents."

"Personally... I listen to whatever intrigues me."

Some cool goth music links I discovered while surfing:

Last Sigh The Liveonline web site and e-zine that includes interviews live on irc, photos, tour dates, reviews, and more.
Hope and Vaseline A comprehensive e-zine about nine inch nails.
Painful Convictions Another NIN website, it is incredibly quick loading for all the graphics and interesting content it has.
Dope Fiend's Lair This website seems to be basically Marilyn Manson and Skinny Puppy; includes SP sound clips (actual full-length songs in .wav format). Now called The Vault of Skinny Puppy
